MBFW Spring/Summer 2013: bebe

On September 10, 2012, the bebe Spring/Summer 2013 collection debuted at the Bortolami Gallery in Chelsea with a series of looks shown on models framed by futuristic, circular portals. The collection was presented gallery-style,  and the unique approach definitely showcased a new direction the company has taken that aims to draw on a more upscale market stance. Expecting tiny girls in skin-tight micro minis,  the new collection definitely caught me by surprise. This was definitely not the same Bebe I knew back in my college years.

Jewel-toned colors of emerald and fuschia, along with crisp whites and sleek blacks dominated the color palette.  European fabrics and luxe leathers with clean lines and demure silhouettes with longer hemlines gave a more polished and grown-up look that is a far cry from the young clubwear that Bebe was known for.

“The company has taken a new direction,” informs designer Manny Mashouf, “We are after the customer that we’ve lost, the last several years we’ve gone a little too young, a little too cheap- so we are going after her with a vengeance. This is about a woman without age, she could be 18 or she could be 60. It’s about attitude and a sense of style. She’s modern, she’s sophisticated and she has that sensual playfulness.”
