How you C!! The Beauty Benefits of Vitamin C

Vitamin C for health and beauty

While you’ve likely been focusing on getting all of your vitamins through  nutrition, the good news is that vitamins are also beneficial to your skin through skincare products! One of the most popular vitamin additions to skin care products is Vitamin C and its derivatives. Vitamin C may come in forms, some being L-Ascorbic acid, ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, and L-ascorbyl-2-sulfate.  L-ascorbic acid is the most active form of vitamin C and has numerous benefits for the skin.

Through many clinical studies, Vitamin C has been found to be anti-aging and anti-inflammatory.  It is also a key player in collagen synthesis because it builds collagen and speeds healing. When antioxidant vitamin C is added to your skin, it helps your skin get rid of free radicals that are known to cause damage to skin cells. It was also found that when applied after a sunburn, vitamin C caused a 50% quicker reduction in redness  than the areas untreated by vitamin C. Inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis and eczema have also shown clinical improvement with the use of vitamin C.

Adding skincare products that contain Vitamin C  to your regimen can help you achieve a healthier, more beautiful glow. Topical use of Vitamin C revitalizes the skin, showing significant improvements in skin tone and texture due to collagenesis, or the production of more collagen. With increased collagen in the skin, skin will look tighter, and more youthful. Vitamin C also works to protect  against UVB rays and and help combat sun damage, wrinkles and photo damage.  Interest in vitamin C as a cosmetic ingredient is mainly a result of its ability to quell UV-induced free radicals and its ability to produce vitamin E, which is another powerful antioxidant. Vitamin C  was also discovered to improve hypergmentation (skin darkening) conditions  such as melasma, age spots, and sun damage.

So what’s the catch with Vitamin C? Vitamin C and its derivatives can become oxidized when exposed to air. Oxidation causes the product to lose efficacy.  Therefore,  always be sure to use vitamin C containing products that are fresh, and watch the expiration dates. Changes in color is is usually not a good sign, so discard a product right away if it does.

Go ahead…. add Vitamin C to your skincare regimen.  Your skin will drink it up!
