Rockin’ With the Rockettes at Rockefeller

This year, New York Presbyterian Hospital became the official children’s hospital sponsor of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. As a way of thanking staff who care for pediatric patients, NYP offered all employees the chance to enter a random drawing to participate in a one-hour group dance class with the Rockettes. The class was held on Saturday, February 20 at Radio City Music Hall

The experience comprised of a typical warmup, Rockette-style, followed by dance choreography from “Baby” and “March of the Wooden Soldiers” in the Christmas Spectacular Show. Aside from learning choreography, we learned show secrets,  like when the Rockettes “hook up” for their kicks,  they aren’t actually touching each other’s shoulders.  Rockettes also kick at “eye height.” It’s not as easy as they make it look,  believe me;  after 2 minutes of kicking continuously, I was ready to kick the bucket! Also, during each performance, each dancer wears character shoes with tiny microphones embedded in them, so the audience really does get a live tap show!

After all that jazz and kicks,  we had a Q & A  and pictures with our Rockette instructors, Alyssa Lemons and Lauren Gibbs.  They gave us insight on a typical Rockette day, and tips on fitness, nutrition, and my fave topic, makeup.  Lauren says the dancers keep it simple with “eyeliner, a lip, a brow, and we’re good to go!”  Special thanks to NYPH and Radio City for this memorable experience!
