Winter Skin 101

Winter snowflakes are beautiful,  but dry flaky skin? Hardly.

*

‘Tis the season for winter,  which mean low humidity and dry winds that often lead to dry, flaky, scaly skin that is prone to irritation. When skin is exposed to extreme  cold temperatures,  blood vessels constrict and reduces blood flow to the skin and oil glands.  This causes the skin’s water content to dwindle,  leading to shrunken, flaky, and dried out skin cells.  Nerve agitation occurs,  which causes that itchy feeling that won’t go away.

Read on for 7 Ways to Keep Skin Soft and Supple this winter season.

1. H2O Hydration

Drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day keeps skin cells plump and moist.  Try to limit consumption of dehydrating beverages like alcohol and coffee and stick to plain ol’ H2O.

2. Work It!

Regular exercise helps to increase blood flow to the skin so it appears bright and glowy. An added bonus: it also boosts detoxification and cell renewal processes.

3. Ban Hot Baths & Showers

While it feels relaxing, intense heat from the bath or shower can be too irritating and drying,  especially for sensitive skin.  Stick to a lukewarm temperature to avoid irritation.

4.  H is for Humidity

Extreme cold + dry furnace heat= flaky skin.  Maintain the skin’s natural moisture by using a humidifier to prevent sensitivity during the winter months. One to try-  Air-O-Swiss Warm/Cool Ultrasonic Mist

5. Skip the Soap, Spare Your Skin

Using “soap-free” detergents and cleansers is a lot gentler on your skin and your clothes. These are made with plant-based cleansing agents that are free from heavy-duty surfactants like sulfates, chlorine, and bleach. Seventh Generation Free & Clear Natural Laundry Detergent . For an in shower treat, try Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash, Fragrance Free, $7.19 at Target stores.

6. Exfoliate

Exfoliating once a week with a gentle scrubbing cleanser, especially on areas like the elbows and knees increases cell turnover as the old layers of dry, dull skin are buffed away.  The result? New layers of healthy skin cells that are smooth and silky. Use a sugar scrub because it contains natural alpha hydroxy acids and hydrating properties that won’t leave the skin dry.   A fave to try? Bliss – Blood Orange+White Pepper Sugar Scrub ,$36 at BeautyBridge.com. It smells yummy and is full of antioxidants.

7. Lock in the Moisture

Apply lotion/ body oil immediately after showering ,  while skin is still damp.  This traps in the moisture and minimizes skin sensitivity to instantly soothe the skin. We love fast-absorbing Bio Oil, $19.99 at Drugstore.com .
