Winter Skin 101

Winter snowflakes are beautiful,  but dry flaky skin? Hardly.


‘Tis the season for winter,  which mean low humidity and dry winds that often lead to dry, flaky, scaly skin that is prone to irritation. When skin is exposed to extreme  cold temperatures,  blood vessels constrict and reduces blood flow to the skin and oil glands.  This causes the skin’s water content to dwindle,  leading to shrunken, flaky, and dried out skin cells.  Nerve agitation occurs,  which causes that itchy feeling that won’t go away.

1. H2O Hydration

Drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day keeps skin cells plump and moist.  Try to limit consumption of dehydrating beverages like alcohol and coffee and stick to plain ol’ H2O.


2. Work It!

Regular exercise helps to increase blood flow to the skin so it appears bright and glowy. An added bonus: it also boosts detoxification and cell renewal processes.


3. Ban Hot Baths & Showers

While it feels relaxing, intense heat from the bath or shower can be too irritating and drying,  especially for sensitive skin.  Stick to a lukewarm temperature to avoid irritation.

4.  H is for Humidity
